FAQs

Overmantel mirrors rose to prominence during the 18th and 19th centuries, specifically designed to be hung above fireplace mantels to reflect candlelight and maximise natural light within a room.

Authentic pieces typically feature a wooden frame gessoed and hand-gilded with gold leaf or metal leaf, often housing hand-silvered sheet glass.

Authentic period pieces often exhibit hand-carved wooden construction under the gesso, foxing or oxidisation within the mirror plate, and traditional joinery methods on the reverse.

Placing an arched mirror above a fireplace or anchoring it against a living room wall creates an illusion of expanded space while introducing classical proportions to contemporary spaces.

Dust gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth and avoid using liquid cleaners, chemical solvents, or abrasive materials that can damage the delicate historical gilding.
