A delightful rare set of 8 George III oak country chairs by Clarkson of Wolverhampton c1800. The chairs have great colour and patina with Chippendale style backs, carved and pierced splats, and squared and tapered seats. The chairs are pegged mortice and tenon construction with stretchers. They have rush drop in seats with three of the seats being freshly done and are extremely comfortable. The chairs have a lovely provenance with them being labelled for ''Clarkson of Snow Hill Wolverhampton''. Thomas Clarkson & Sons have been in existence since the 17th century. The Clarkson family were first recorded as clockmakers in London in 1640. In 1755 , Hewitt Clarkson moved the business to Cock Street, Wolverhampton, Staffordshire. The family continued to trade there successfully, manufacturing long-case clocks. In about 1780, the business moved to Dudley Street, later known as Snow Hill, in Wolverhampton.
