Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Pierced acrategy and foliate carving: hand-shaped Italian frame work.
Gilding worn through to the red bole beneath: decades of surface cleaning.
Wide bevel on the mirror plate: traditional plate-glass grinding.
Light dark specks in the silvering: natural oxidisation of old glass backing.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 19th-century Italian Florentine Rococo Revival wall mirror takes the form of a rectangular giltwood frame finished in gold leaf. The decorative surround includes pierced acanthus leaf scrollwork, a gadrooned inner border, and corner foliate motifs enclosing a bevelled glass plate. Signs of age comprise softened gilding and light foxing on the glass. The piece measures 60 cm high, 51 cm wide, and 6 cm deep. Position this wall mirror above a sideboard in a living room, dining room, or hallway to add a reflective surface and traditional decoration to the interior. The design suits French Chateau or period-style rooms.

FAQs

Originating from Florence, Italy, these mirrors feature intricate hand-carved wood frames adorned with openwork scrollwork, foliage motifs, and traditional gold leaf application inspired by Baroque and Rococo designs.

The frames were hand-carved from lightweight woods such as pine or lime, coated with a clay bole base, gilded with genuine gold leaf, and fitted with bevelled glass plates.

Authentic pieces demonstrate hand-carving marks on the rear timber frame, natural wear or oxidisation to the gold leaf revealing the reddish bole beneath, and heavy bevelled glass consistent with period manufacturing.

A giltwood mirror functions as a focal point when placed above a fireplace mantel, console table, or hallway sideboard, creating contrast against minimal contemporary walls.

Dust the hand-carved frame gently with a dry soft feather duster or soft dry brush, avoiding liquid cleaners, water, or commercial polishes that can degrade the gold leaf coating.
