Originating in 19th-century Britain, Italianate overmantel mirrors incorporate Neoclassical motifs inspired by Renaissance architecture, such as moulded arches, central rosettes, and decorative corner spandrels designed to sit above a fireplace mantle.

These mirrors were constructed using a carved timber frame coated with layers of gesso and finished with micro-thin gold leaf, which was then burnished or left matte to highlight the carved details.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit signs of age such as natural craquelure in the gesso, gentle wear to the gold leaf revealing the red bole clay beneath, original plate glass with slight foxing, and heavy timber backboards.

Position the mirror directly above a living room fireplace or a contemporary console table to anchor the room, using its warm gold frame to contrast against neutral or dark wall tones.
