This early 20th century Jacobean Revival monks bench is made from solid oak in a dark brown timber colour. The dual-purpose item transforms from a chair into a table by flipping the circular tilt-top backrest over to rest on the straight wooden arms. The timber features decorative carved rosettes, a carved circular motif on the backrest, turned arm supports, and four turned legs joined by lower box stretchers. Surface wear includes age-related marks, scratches, and fading across the dark wood surfaces, along with structural shrinkage on the solid rectangular seat. The chair stands 108 cm high, 85 cm wide, and 58 cm deep, while the table measures 71 cm high, 85 cm wide, and 85 cm deep. It serves practically as an occasional seating option and a conversion table suitable for living spaces, hallways, or studies in an English country house interior.

A monks bench, also known as a settle table or table-chair, is a space-saving piece of furniture featuring a seat with a hinged backrest that pivots down to rest on the armrests, transforming the chair into a tabletop.

Historically, monks benches were constructed primarily from solid hard woods such as European oak, walnut, or pine, using traditional joinery methods including mortise and tenon joints and hand-carved decorative motifs.

Authentic period pieces display signs of historical craftsmanship, such as hand-planed timber surfaces, pegs rather than modern screws, natural wear around the pivot pins, and age-related oxidation within the wood grain.

A monks bench functions well in a hallway, entryway, or dining space, offering practical seating and surface area while introducing structural historic character to complement neutral modern schemes.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a dry cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, while keeping the piece away from direct heat sources and excessive humidity to prevent wood movement.
