This large Victorian overmantel mirror dates from circa 1900 and is constructed from mahogany simulated rosewood with a warm brown timber colour and clear mirror plates. The ornate design incorporates a lattice pediment crest, tiered display shelves, carved scrollwork, intricate mouldings, bevelled mirror panels, and small turned bun feet along the base. Foxing is present on the mirrors, and a small turned bun foot is missing on the right-hand side. The piece measures 160.6 cm wide, 160.2 cm high, and 21 cm deep. Positioned in a reception room above a fireplace mantel, this overmantel mirror provides a traditional focal point while reflecting light around the space. The multiple small display shelves accommodate decorative objects, while the lower sectional mirror panels span the width of the piece.

An overmantel mirror is a decorative structure designed to hang or rest directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. Popular during the Victorian era, these pieces often featured elaborate hand-carved wooden frames, multiple mirror panels, and integrated display shelves for ceramics and ornaments.

Victorian overmantel mirrors were typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or oak, or gilding over gesso and pine. The mirror plates featured silvered glass, often with hand-cut bevelled edges following the contours of the wooden frame.

Authentic Victorian pieces feature period-correct joinery such as hand-cut dovetails or tenon joints on the reverse frame structure. Additional signs include natural age-related foxing on the silver glass plating, hand-carved decorative motifs, and original wood patination that reflects light unevenly.

A Victorian overmantel mirror can serve as a dramatic focal point placed above a modern fireplace or a contemporary sideboard. Styling the small integrated shelves with minimal contemporary ceramics or books creates a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern design.

Dust the wooden frame regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish occasionally to preserve the timbers hydration. Clean the glass panels using a specialist glass cleaner applied to a cloth rather than sprayed directly onto the frame to protect the silvering and wood finish.
