This nineteenth-century French wall mirror brings classic proportions and understated character to a home. It features a rectangular profile with a substantial moulded wooden frame finished in an off-white paint with visible weathering and wear. The linear carving creates simple tiered architectural details around the original mercury glass plate, accompanied by its original timber backboards. Measuring 150 cm high, 83 cm wide and 4 cm deep, the piece offers versatile utility for both portrait and landscape orientation. It sits naturally above a sideboard in a dining room, along a hallway console, or mounted as a focal point in a living space, adding architectural presence and reflective depth to traditional and transitional interiors alike.

A 19th-century French painted mirror typically features a moulded or carved wooden frame finished with layered paint or gesso, drawing inspiration from French provincial and traditional chateau architectural styles.

These pieces are generally constructed from solid timber, such as pine or oak, coated with gesso, hand-painted finishes, and fitted with silvered glass plates.

Authentic period mirrors display original timber backboards, hand-moulded frame details, age-appropriate surface wear to the paintwork, and light oxidisation or foxing on the glass.

Mount the mirror above a mantlepiece or sideboard to reflect natural light, or lean a large frame vertically against an empty wall to add depth to a hallway or living space.

Dust the frame gently using a dry microfibre cloth and avoid harsh chemical sprays; clean the glass plate by applying cleaner to a cloth first to prevent liquid from seeping behind the rim.
