Description

A remarkable set of six Sheraton style mahogany shield-back dining chairs with a Royal history.

The chairs have out-swept uprights within the shield shaped backs, carved with leafy ornament and a stylized sunburst below. The overstuffed seats are upholstered in a rich and luxurious red damask and they stand on elegant square tapering legs with spade feet.

The condition is exactly as they came out of the house, including the dust. One chair shows signs of old repairs to the back where original components have been re-glued. (These repairs could easily be disguised with just a little dark wax).

A unique opportunity to acquire a great set of chairs that were sat in by George V and Queen Mary.

They are believed to have been in the same family since new. The most recent custodians live in Kent but their Great Grandparents (Sir Charles & Lady Cayzer) lived at St Lawrence Hall on the Isle of Wight (now demolished). and once hosted the King and Queen to a garden party. A photograph was taken of them sitting on the chairs in the shade and a copy of that photo is supplied with the chairs.

Date of Manufacture

Christopher Buck Antiques Ltd. has dated these Mahogany Shield Back Dining Chairs to the 19th Century.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Shield back chairs became prominent during the late 18th century, popularised by master cabinetmakers such as George Hepplewhite within the neoclassical design movement.

Authentic period pieces are typically crafted from dense hardwoods like mahogany or satinwood, utilising traditional mortise and tenon joinery and hand-carved details.

Authentication involves examining the hand-carved woodwork for tool marks, checking for period-appropriate joinery, and inspecting the timber for signs of age and patina.

Pairing classical wooden seating with a contemporary dining table creates a striking juxtaposition that highlights the craftsmanship of the vintage pieces.

Maintain the wood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, applying periodic applications of beeswax, and avoiding silicone-based polishes.
