Set of Eight Antique Sheraton Style Shield Back Dining Chairs

1940 - 1960
Description

A lovely set of eight antique Sheraton style shield back dining chairs. They were made in England, and date from around the 1950’s.

The quality is superb, they have beautifully carved pierced back rests with wheat sheaf motifs. They have tapered legs terminating in spade feet, with stretchered bases for extra stability. They are solid beech, which has lovely grain patterns and a beautiful, warm colour tone, similar to walnut.

We have had the frames re-polished and the drop in seats have been re-upholstered in a cream cotton fabric. The condition is excellent for their age, with just some incredibly minor wear remaining beneath the polish here and there.

Width carvers – 23 inches , 58 cm

Width side chairs – 21 inches , 54 cm

Depth – 22 inches , 56 cm

Height – 38 inches , 96 cm

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Sheraton style shield back dining chairs draw inspiration from late eighteenth-century Neoclassical designs, characterised by a shield-shaped backrest, elegant central splats, and slim straight or tapered legs.

These chairs were predominantly crafted from dense hardwoods such as solid mahogany or satinwood, often featuring hand-carved decorative motifs and upholstered seats fastened with traditional webbing and horsehair padding.

Authentic examples display precise hand-carved joinery, such as mortise and tenon joints, natural wood oxidisation inside construction seams, and proportional neoclassical back splats representing wheat sheaves, vases, or urns.

In modern settings, pairing traditional dark mahogany chairs with minimalist neutral dining tables creates a refined contrast, while updating the upholstery with clean linen or contemporary fabrics bridges historical design with modern aesthetics.

To maintain the finish, dust the timber regularly with a soft microfibre cloth and apply beeswax polish once or twice a year, avoiding modern aerosol cleaners and direct sunlight to prevent drying and fading.
