MotifsShield back, Carved splat, Square tapered legs

This set of four George III dining chairs dates from around 1800. Constructed from warm brown mahogany with a polished finish, they follow the distinctive Hepplewhite style. Each chair displays a carved shield back featuring open splats with wheat-ear or bell-husk motifs, set above square tapered legs terminating in spade feet. The seats are upholstered in a light-coloured damask fabric with a woven floral pattern and finished with a braided trim. All structural joints are solid and the re-covered seats are in clean condition. Measuring 92 cm in height with a seat height of 43 cm, a width of 52 cm and a depth of 43 cm, these chairs suit formal dining settings or traditional kitchen spaces. They provide comfortable seating around a dining table while adding period character to an English country house interior.

FAQs

Hepplewhite style furniture originated in late 18th-century Britain, characterised by light, elegant proportions, shield-back chair designs, and refined neoclassical motifs popularized by designer George Hepplewhite.

Genuine late Georgian Hepplewhite chairs were typically constructed using solid mahogany or satinwood frames, featuring mortise-and-tenon joinery, carved pierced splats, and woven or fabric upholstered seats.

Authentic period examples feature shield-shaped or heart-shaped backs, carved wheat-ear or feather splat motifs, square tapered legs, hand-cut joinery, and natural hand-carved detailing.

Pair these neoclassical chairs with contemporary timber dining tables, neutral wall palettes, or traditional patterned textiles to balance historic timber craftsmanship with modern interior spaces.

Dust mahogany frames regularly with a dry soft cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish annually along the wood grain, while keeping textile upholstery protected from direct sunlight.
