Set of Eight Hepplewhite Style Mahogany Lyre Back Dining Chairs, Circa 1930

1920 - 1940
Description

An elegant and decorative set of eight mahogany dining chairs, including two carvers and six side chairs, made in the Hepplewhite taste and dating to the first half of the 20th century.

The finely shaped shield backs incorporate particularly attractive pierced lyre splats, with carved foliate decoration and delicate vertical strings. The serpentine-fronted drop-in seats are upholstered in a neutral fabric, making them easily adaptable to a variety of interiors.

The chairs are raised on slender reeded and tapering front legs, giving the set a light and refined appearance, while the two carvers have gracefully shaped open arms.

A very attractive and practical set of eight dining chairs, drawing strongly on the elegant designs of the late 18th century and particularly well suited to a Georgian or traditional dining room.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Hepplewhite style chairs, originating in 18th-century England, are recognized by their Neoclassical influence, balanced proportions, and distinctively carved openwork backsplats such as shield, heart, or lyre shapes. Front legs are typically square-tapered or straight and fluted.

Dense hardwoods like mahogany or satinwood are standard for Hepplewhite style frames due to their durability and fine grain suitability for precise carving. The drop-in or padded seats are typically upholstered in neutral woven fabrics, silk, or damask.

Twentieth-century revival pieces, such as those made around 1930, feature precise machine-assisted joinery alongside hand-finishing, uniform timber cuts, and modern upholstery padding underneath. Original 18th-century examples will show irregular hand-planing, hand-carved dovetails, and historic wear on construction points.

Pair classic mahogany chairs with a minimalist oak or glass dining table to soften formal lines, or place them against modern neutral backdrops. Reupholstering the drop-in seat cushions in contemporary linen or textured boucle helps bridge historical and modern aesthetic schemes.

Dust wood frames regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year to maintain the luster. Keep chairs away from direct sunlight and central heating radiators to prevent mahogany from drying out or cracking.
