This 18th century Chippendale period pier glass mirror comes from the Georgian Chippendale style and is constructed from carved pine, glass, and giltwood with an antique gold finish. The elaborate frame shows intricate acanthus leaf carvings, C-scrolls, a cartouche cresting, Rococo moulding, and well-carved shell motifs, housing its original mercury glass mirror plate which displays minor blemishes to the edges. Measuring 78 cm high, 42 cm wide, and 9 cm deep, this wall hanging mirror fits well on a narrow wall space in an entrance hallway, living room, or bedroom to bring a classic English Country House aesthetic to a home today.

A Chippendale pier glass mirror is a tall, narrow wall mirror crafted during the mid-to-late 18th century, designed primarily to hang on the wall space between windows. The style is characterised by elaborate Rococo carving, including C-scrolls, acanthus foliage, and asymmetrical crestings executed on giltwood frames.

These mirrors were constructed using hand-carved softwoods, such as pine or lime wood, which were coated with gesso and overlaid with thin gold leaf (giltwood). The reflective glass plate was made using mercury-amalgam methods, often resulting in slight distortions and subtle grey spotting over time.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-carved joinery, original backboards secured with wrought iron nails, and natural wear or rubbing to the gilt surface where the reddish bole undercoat shows through. The original glass plates typically display light oxidisation and an uneven, hand-blown thickness.

Positioning an ornate giltwood mirror above a contemporary console table or a simple mantelpiece creates an engaging visual contrast between classical carved detailing and clean modern architectural lines. Hanging the mirror opposite a light source maximises illumination across the room.

Giltwood frames should be dusted gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding water, chemical cleaners, or damp cloths that can dissolve the water-gilders size and damage the gold leaf. Maintain a stable indoor humidity level to prevent the wooden substrate from shrinking or cracking.
