FAQs

Nineteenth-century French mirrors often feature hand-carved wooden frames, traditional joinery, and painted or gilded finishes that reflect the craftsmanship of the period.

Authentic period mirrors typically utilise solid wood frames such as oak, pine, or fruitwood, paired with hand-silvered glass plates held in place by wooden backing boards.

Authenticity is indicated by historical hallmarks such as oxidisation and foxing on the glass, hand-cut joinery, old chippy paint layers, and hand-carved detailing rather than moulded resin.

Positioning the piece above a contemporary sideboard or fireplace creates a striking focal point by contrasting historical texture with clean, modern lines.

Dust the carved frame gently with a soft brush and clean the glass using a lint-free cloth and a mild, ammonia-free solution applied directly to the cloth rather than the mirror.
