Description

RETIREMENT SALE. 35% OFF. WAS £5950. NOW £3868.

A fabulous quality walnut and gilt framed pier or console mirror. This is exceptional quality with the gilding being water gilding in 24ct gold leaf onto solid carved wood, rather than the inferior models which are parcel gilt onto plaster/composition. The top having a swan neck pediment; with egg and dart detailing and two trailing oak leaf carved side details interspersed with acorns. The top and base having solid carved acanthus leaf detailing. This is a much deeper model than other inferior comparable models. The glass plate is original with some small areas of foxing but is not detrimental to the piece. The English walnut a rich mellow colour. Excellent condition. Measures 57"h x 30"w ( plate 30"h x 21"w)

The William Kent style, prominent during the early to mid-18th century, is characterised by heavy architectural proportions, bold classical motifs such as egg-and-dart moulding, gilded accents, and rich dark timbers like walnut and mahogany.

These mirrors typically feature a soft wood or hardwood core, such as pine or walnut, overlaid with figured walnut veneers, intricate fret-cut profiles, and water-gilded gesso decorations applied to carved wooden details.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-correct construction methods including hand-cut dovetails, old secondary woods, hand-beveled mercury glass or early sheet glass with characteristic oxidation spots, and patinated hand-applied gilding.

A historical mirror functions effectively as a focal point above a modern console table or fireplace mantel, contrasting rich historic textures and metallic finishes with minimalist contemporary surroundings.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity and temperature levels, avoiding direct sunlight, and dusting gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth without using liquid chemical cleaners on the fragile gilt surface or historic glass.
