A set of twelve Victorian mahogany balloon back dining chairs dating from circa 1860, finished with a French polish in a rich brown timber tone. Each chair displays a curved wooden balloon back and drop-in upholstered seats covered in a pale green patterned fabric. The front legs feature turned upright details with rounded ring turns above plain lower sections, while the seats measure 44 cm wide, 38 cm deep, and 89 cm high with a seat height of 47 cm. These dining chairs are suited for placement around a formal dining table in a traditional dining room or an English country house setting. They provide functional seating for gatherings, family meals, or dinner parties, adding a period aesthetic to living spaces or reception rooms while maintaining a cohesive look across all twelve matching pieces.

Introduced during the 1830s and remaining popular throughout the mid-19th century, balloon back chairs feature a rounded, continuous wooden back rail resembling a balloon, characterised by curved lines and minimal sharp angles.

These chairs were primarily crafted from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, joined with traditional mortise and tenon timber joints, and upholstered with natural materials like horsehair padding.

Authentic pieces feature hand-carved joinery, original hand-turned front legs, natural wood grain variation beneath aged varnish, and evidence of historical upholstery work or hand-sawn frame marks.

To incorporate these chairs into contemporary spaces, pair them with a clean-lined modern oak or stone table to create an eclectic contrast, or re-upholster the seats in contemporary textured fabrics such as linen.

Maintain the timber finish by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying beeswax every few months, keeping the furniture away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage or fabric fading.
