This tall nineteenth-century English wall mirror exhibits a grand Classical style with a rectangular timber frame finished in gilded gold. The tall vertical wooden surround displays a carved frame moulding, beaded trim, and visible signs of age including surface wear on the timber and a split mirror plate with foxed glass. The plate is divided horizontally into two sections, retaining its original back boards, and the entire piece measures 180cm x 60cm. Suitable for positioning in a hallway or along a narrow wall space, the mirror can be hung in either portrait or landscape orientation to reflect light within a room. Its weathered glass and traditional gilt wood frame bring an authentic period aesthetic to interior spaces today.

A pier mirror was originally designed in the 18th and 19th centuries to fit on the wall space between two windows, known architecturally as a pier. These tall mirrors were crafted to reflect natural light into the room and enhance the illusion of interior space.

Nineteenth-century mirrors were predominantly constructed with solid wood frames featuring hand-carved or moulded ornament finished in gold leaf or lacquered stain. The reflective plates utilised silvered glass or mercury backing, frequently assembled in multiple sections due to historical manufacturing limits on large glass sheets.

Authentic period pieces usually display age-related oxidisation, known as foxing, within the internal metallic backing rather than uniform surface distressing. Examination of the reverse often reveals hand-sawn timber backing boards, antique fixings, and structural joinery characteristic of traditional hand craftsmanship.

A tall mirror can be positioned leaning against a neutral wall in a hallway, bedroom, or living area to create vertical depth and architectural structure. Placing the mirror opposite a natural light source maximises room illumination while contrasting aged textures against contemporary furnishings.

Clean the mirror glass using a dry microfiber cloth, avoiding liquid cleaners that could seep into the edges and further degrade the silver backing. Dust the gilded wood frame gently with a soft, dry bristle brush without applying water or solvent polishes, which can erode the leaf layer.
