This large late 19th-century club armchair belongs to the Victorian period and exemplifies the English Country House style. The piece uses hardwood, damask fabric, and brass, presenting an olive gold colour scheme. The armchair has a deep seat cushion, rolled arms, a fringe trim along the base, and brass castors on turned legs. It retains original horsehair, a down feather cushion, and original stamped castors, showing wear to the fabric. Measuring 73.75 cm in height, 86.5 cm in width, and 115 cm in depth, the armchair is suitable for a living room, study, or library interior, where it serves as a comfortable seating option for reading or relaxing.

Howard & Sons easy chairs are defined by their deep-seated proportions, coil-spring upholstery, down-filled cushions, and short turned front legs mounted on brass castors. The London maker became renowned for producing exceptionally comfortable seating during the Victorian era.

Victorian upholstered armchairs were typically constructed with solid beech or oak frames, hand-tied steel coil springs, natural hair stuffing, and down feather padding. Front legs often featured brass castors, while upholstery ranged from wool velvet to silk brocade and damask.

Authentic pieces are identified by makers stamps on the inside of the rear legs or on the brass castors, typically reading Howard & Sons Ltd Berners St. Additionally, original under-upholstery often features monogrammed ticking fabric stamped with the company name.

A traditional club chair acts as an anchor piece when placed alongside modern minimalist side tables, neutral architectural background panelling, or clean-lined floor lamps. Blending vintage floral damask with contemporary textures creates a layered design scheme.

Damask fabric should be gently vacuumed with a soft brush attachment and protected from direct sunlight to prevent colour fading. Brass castors should be kept clean of debris and polished lightly without allowing liquid cleaner to contact the surrounding wood or fabric.
