This 19th-century Victorian armchair is a Bridgewater model by Howard & Sons. The piece exhibits a low-slung profile with sloping low arms, a sprung back, and a deep seat cushion upholstered in a blue and white patterned fabric. It stands on ring-turned mahogany and walnut front legs fitted with original stamped gilt lacquered brass castors. Traditional upholstery methods retain the original horsehair and feather stuffing along with a sprung seat and back. The armchair measures 84 cm in height, 75 cm in width, and 96.5 cm in depth. It functions as a comfortable seating option for a living room, study, or drawing room in an English country house interior.

The Bridgewater model is characterised by its low, padded sloping arms, deep feather-filled seat, and backrest angled for relaxed lounging, originating from renowned 19th-century English cabinetmakers.

Chairs from this era typically feature solid hardwood frames such as beech or birch, steel coil springs, natural hair stuffing, turned mahogany legs, and stamped brass castors.

Authentic examples often feature makers stamps or printed ticking on the inner rear legs or castors, alongside distinctive high-grade coil spring construction and plush seat cushioning.

Pairing a classic deep-seated armchair with clean-lined contemporary architectural lighting and minimalist side tables creates a balanced dialogue between historic craftsmanship and modern design.

Vacuum upholstery regularly using a soft brush attachment, keep natural timber legs treated with beeswax, and avoid placing fabric in direct sunlight to prevent fibre degradation and fading.
