These 19th Century French wall mirrors follow the Louis XVI style and consist of a pair of small oval gilt items made from giltwood, plaster, and glass. The golden frames display several distinct decorative elements including a carved ribbon bow crest at the top, a beaded inner rim, and engraved floral details across the surface. Visible signs of age include a few minor bits of damage to the gesso, showing some wear along the gilded borders. Each individual mirror measures 51 cm high and 36 cm wide, making them compact pieces suitable for domestic placement. Such wall mirrors fit well in a home today when hung in a narrow wall space or hallway within a French chateau or traditionally styled interior. They provide functional reflection while adding a decorative touch to vertical surfaces in living rooms, bedrooms, or entrance areas. The matching pair creates a balanced arrangement on a wall, bringing classic nineteenth-century design characteristics into modern residential settings through their shaped oval frames and traditional gilded finish.

Emerging in late 18th-century France, Louis XVI style mirrors feature neoclassical symmetry, delicate oval proportions, and top crestings shaped like tied ribbons or bows.

Frames were typically carved from timber, coated with layers of gesso and red clay bole, then finished with real gold leaf using traditional water-gilded techniques.

Authentic period pieces often reveal red clay bole or raw timber showing through worn gold leaf, hand-carved joinery on the back, and age-appropriate distressing or silvering degradation on the mirror glass.

Hanging a matching pair symmetrically on either side of a fireplace mantel, above bedside tables, or within a gallery wall adds depth and classical contrast to contemporary spaces.

Dust the gilded surfaces gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or camel hair brush, strictly avoiding liquid cleaners or water which can dissolve traditional gesso and gold leaf layers.
