This large late nineteenth-century French wall mirror brings a warm brown tone and refined French Provincial style to a room. The walnut frame has rounded corners and deep vertical reeded moulding running along the sides. Small carved ribbon motifs ornament the intersections at the corners and midpoints, adding subtle detail to the woodwork. The piece retains its original mirror plate and backboards, displaying gentle signs of age consistent with a date around 1890. Measuring 160 cm high by 92 cm wide, it provides a substantial reflective surface. In a contemporary home, this mirror suits placement above a sideboard in a dining room, or suspended over a mantelpiece in a living space. It also works well hung vertically in a hallway to create a sense of light and openness upon entry. The rich grain of the warm brown timber integrates easily with both traditional and transitional interior schemes, while the classic rectangular profile with softened corners complements existing furniture without dominating the wall.

Nineteenth-century French wall mirrors are characterised by solid hardwood framessuch as walnut, oak, or gilded limefrequently featuring reeded mouldings, rounded corners, and hand-carved decorative motifs reflecting period craft styles.

Frames were constructed from dense European hardwoods like walnut, fitted with silvered mercury or early nitrate glass plates and backed with solid wood protective panelling.

Authentic period pieces display original joinery marks, genuine age-related oxidisation or light desilvered spots on the glass mirror plate, and natural uneven wear along the timber edges.

Large framed mirrors can be mounted above a sideboard or fireplace mantle, or positioned leaning against a structural wall in an entryway to enhance light and visual depth.

Dust the timber frame regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and nourish with natural beeswax polish, avoiding direct application of liquid glass cleaners onto the wooden frame.
