Rococo giltwood mirrors from the 18th and 19th centuries are characterised by elaborate asymmetrical scrollwork, acanthus leaves, shell motifs, and floral cresting. Frames were typically crafted from hand-carved wood or composition moulding before being finished with genuine gold leaf.

These mirrors were traditionally constructed using carved pine or lime wood bases, coated with gesso and bole clay before applying thin sheets of gold leaf through water gilding. The reflective mirror plate was typically made using mercury or silvered glass techniques.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-sawn timber backboards, visible joint construction, and subtle wear to the gold leaf showing reddish bole clay beneath. The mirror plate will often show natural age-related foxing, oxidisation spots, and slight imperfections in the glass.

Position the mirror above a contemporary console table or fireplace mantelpiece to create visual contrast between classic architectural framing and modern minimalism. Hanging the mirror opposite a window maximises natural light reflection throughout the room.

Dust the ornate carved areas gently using a soft, dry squirrel-hair brush or microfibre duster without applying pressure. Avoid using liquid cleaners, water, or commercial glass sprays near the frame, as moisture damages traditional water gilding and gesso.
