Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE VICTORIAN ERA:
Countersunk slotted screws securing the brass mounts: cabinet making before cross-head fixings.
Concealed sprung panel revealing two narrow drawers: complex late nineteenth-century mechanical construction.
Hand-fitted ebonised timber pen tray and dividers: traditional workshop finishing.
Ink stains inside the secondary mahogany compartments: working life.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

A writing slope is a portable wooden box crafted during the nineteenth century that opens to reveal an angled writing surface alongside storage for ink, pens, and paper.

These boxes were typically made using dense hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, or rosewood, often featuring brass corner brackets, lock plates, and leather-lined writing surfaces.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joinery, period-correct brass bindings, natural age patina across the wood, and original lock mechanisms.

A writing slope can be placed closed as a decorative box on a console table, bookshelf, or desk, or left slightly open to display internal compartments and antique desk accessories.

Dust the exterior regularly with a soft cloth, treat the wood veneer periodically with beeswax polish, and maintain a stable indoor humidity to prevent wood shrinkage or veneer lifting.
