The Louis XV style, prominent in 18th-century France, is characterised by Rococo elements including naturalistic carving, asymmetrical C-scrolls, foliage, and shell or rocaille motifs. Mirror frames from this era feature flowing curves rather than rigid straight lines.

Frames were carved from softwoods such as pine or lime, then coated with multiple layers of gesso, a mixture of chalk and animal glue. Once smooth, a layer of bole clay was applied as a base before fine gold leaf was laid and burnished.

Authentic period pieces show hand-carving marks on the reverse frame, natural oxidisation of the gesso, and areas where the red or grey bole beneath the gilding has worn through over time. The mercury glass mirror plate often exhibits dark spotting or foxing.

A period giltwood mirror serves as a focal point when placed above a modern fireplace mantel or console table. Contrasting the ornate carved frame against neutral, minimalist walls enhances both historical detail and modern architecture.

Dust giltwood gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to prevent lifting loose leaf. Avoid water, commercial cleaners, or damp cloths, as moisture dissolves gesso and damages historical water gilding.
