This continental wall mirror dates from the 18th century and is made of pine, glass, and damask fabric in a warm brown colour with a red damask inset panel. The frame displays egg-and-dart carving along the outer borders, side ear brackets, and silver braid edging the rich red silk damask fabric panel which surrounds the central rectangular glass plate. The mirror plate is a replacement and the silk shows wear. Measuring 74 cm high by 64 cm wide, with a narrowest point of 53.5 cm, this piece hangs on a wall in a home today above a sideboard in an English country house setting.

Eighteenth-century pine mirrors feature architectural details such as egg-and-dart moulding, side ears, or pediments, drawing inspiration from classical Georgian and Kentian designs. They frequently incorporate decorative elements like fabric insets, gesso details, or carved borders.

These mirrors were constructed using solid pine timber connected with hand-cut joinery. Hand-carved mouldings were applied to the face of the frame, often surrounding central glass plates set beside textile or painted insets.

Authentic pieces display evidence of period hand tools on the reverse, original hand-forged fixings, and variations in glass thickness associated with early mercury-amalgam manufacturing methods. Carved details show subtle irregularities characteristic of manual work.

Position the mirror above a mantelpiece, console table, or side cabinet to serve as an architectural focal point. The warm timber tones and textile details complement painted panelling, stone feature walls, or neutral modern backgrounds.

Dust carved wooden surfaces regularly using a soft, dry natural-bristle brush to avoid damaging delicate edges. Keep liquid cleaners away from textile panels and clean the glass using a microfibre cloth lightly moistened with water.
