This Victorian mirror dates from 1890 and takes the form of a rectangular table glass with a folding easel support, designed in an English country house style. The timber displays a warm amber brown birds eye figure veneer with a deep cushioned frame, mitred corner joints, and an inner gilt slip moulding surrounding the mirror glass plate. Signs of age include minor knocks and small losses around the corners of the frame alongside original wood surfaces. The piece measures 41 cm high by 36 cm wide. Positioned on top of a sideboard or a bedroom dresser, the mirror provides a practical and decorative accent for everyday use in hallways, living rooms, or studies. The easel back permits freestanding placement on flat surfaces, while the compact scale suits smaller tabletops and mantelpieces. Regular cleaning maintains the polished wooden grain and the reflective glass surface in domestic settings.

Victorian birds eye maple mirrors are defined by the distinctive figure of the timber veneer, which features small swirl motifs resembling birds eyes. Frequently framed with contrasting dark timber inlays or inner gilt slips, these pieces were widely produced during the mid-to-late 19th century for dressing tables and vanity sets.

Antique easel back mirrors were constructed using a rigid wood frame, often veneered in decorative hardwoods, surrounding mirror plate glass held by a wooden backing board. A hinged leg or support bracket was attached to the rear to allow the mirror to stand unassisted on flat surfaces.

Authentic 19th-century maple wood frames feature genuine timber veneer over a solid pine or oak substrate, showing minor surface crazing to the original varnish and hand-cut mitred joints. Additionally, original backing boards typically show signs of oxidisation and hand-planed finishing.

A birds eye maple mirror can be placed atop a sideboard, hallway console, or vanity table to create depth and reflect natural light. The honey-toned timber pairs effectively with both classic muted palettes and contrasting contemporary dark backdrops.

Maple timber frames should be cleaned with a dry microfibre cloth and dusted regularly, applying natural beeswax sparingly to preserve the wood finish. Avoid direct application of liquid glass cleaners onto the mirror surface, as moisture can seep behind the gilt slip and damage the backing silvering.
