A pair of Queen Anne revival pier glasses date to the nineteenth century, specifically around 1880, and take the form of tall wall mirrors with arched pediments and cushion frames. The black japanned wooden frames receive extensive gilded decoration featuring chinoiserie motifs, with bevelled split mirror plates that show natural foxing and silver speckling. Each glass plate incorporates cut glass accents and crests near the top, backed by oak panels. These mirrors measure 172 cm high by 68 cm wide. Positioned above a sideboard or console table in a dining room, hallway or drawing room, they reflect interior light while adding traditional English country house character to the space.

Queen Anne style Chinoiserie mirrors typically feature contoured, arched top frames with delicate pediments, decorated using European japanning techniques to imitate East Asian lacquerwork. These frames display gilded motifs of figures, flora, and architectural pavilions against a dark background.

These pieces were built using timber frames, often pine or oak, covered in layers of gesso and build-up lacquer varnish known as japanning. Gold leaf or metallic powders were used for hand-painted decoration, holding silvered or mercury-backed mirror glass plates within the frame.

Authentic pieces demonstrate raised hand-painted decoration with natural surface craquelure and age-related wear to the lacquer. Examining the backboards for hand-sawn timber, original iron tacks, and natural oxidisation on the mirror plate silvering also confirms age.

A pair of tall pier mirrors works effectively positioned symmetrically on either side of a doorway, flanking a hallway console table, or hung above twin sideboards in a formal dining room to enhance spatial light and architectural balance.

Clean japanned frames gently using a dry, soft microfibre cloth without liquid polish or solvents, which dissolve historic lacquer layers. Mirror glass should be cleaned by spraying glass cleaner directly onto a cloth rather than the frame to prevent liquid seeping under the timber rim.
