This Georgian Tunbridge Ware writing box is made from wood with paper and lacquer elements in an ochre yellow colourway. The rectangular lid features a central circular printed vignette depicting a historic country house, surrounded by geometric green and black borders against an ochre background panel, alongside a painted line border and visible surface wear. The piece measures 15 cm w x 7.5 cm d x 4 cm h. Today, this compact desk accessory finds a home on an office desk or library table, serving as a decorative storage container for small stationery items. The surface displays authentic age-related patina and scuffing, highlighting its historic character.

Tunbridge Ware refers to decorative wooden objects, primarily small boxes and desk accessories, produced in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, during the 18th and 19th centuries, often featuring inlaid wooden mosaics or printed views of landmark buildings.

Traditional 19th-century writing boxes were constructed from solid woods such as pine, walnut, or mahogany, and were often finished with paper lithographs, protective varnish, or inlaid wooden veneers.

Authentic pieces display construction methods typical of the period, including fine dovetail or sliding joints, surface age consistent with natural varnish oxidisation, and paper or felt lining on the interior or base.

A small decorative wooden box can be placed on an office desk, positioned atop a stack of hardcover books on a coffee table, or displayed on a mantelpiece to introduce visual texture and historical interest.

Keep the box in a temperature-controlled environment away from direct sunlight and moisture to prevent warping or peeling, and dust gentle with a clean, dry, lint-free cloth.
