This early 19th-century English country Windsor side chair is made from solid elm and finished in a dark brown timber colour. The frame incorporates an arched hoop back with multiple vertical spindles, a shaped pierced central splat containing a decorative bull’s eye carving, and a deep-sculpted saddle seat. Visible details include turned legs, H-form stretcher stretchers, and natural wear and grain variation across the wooden surfaces. Measuring 93 cm high, 43 cm wide, and 41 cm deep with a seat height of 46 cm, this chair functions practically as a dining seat or desk chair. It suits placement around a dining table or in a living space, bringing a rustic farmhouse aesthetic to an interior.

A hoop back Windsor chair is characterised by a continuous steam-bent timber rail forming the upper back frame, fitted with vertical spindles and a central splat anchored directly into a solid timber seat.

Craftsmen typically used regional English hardwoods, combining shaped elm for the contoured solid seat with ash or beech for the steam-bent hoops, spindles, and turned legs.

Authentic early 19th-century examples display hand-cut saddle seats, wedged tenon joinery visible on the seat surface, faint tool marks underneath, and surface patination near joint junctions.

These wooden chairs function well as single accent pieces beside a modern desk, placed in pairs within an entryway, or integrated into an eclectic dining arrangement around a rustic table.

Dust the chair regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a thin layer of natural beeswax polish annually to protect the grain and preserve the historic surface patination.
