This Victorian games box dates from around 1870 and exemplifies the Gothic style popular during the period. The rectangular box has a hinged lid with rounded edges, finished in a dark brown figured coromandel veneer. Elaborate pierced brass strapwork binds the exterior, embellished with inset rounded agate cabochons and fitted with a keyhole escutcheon on the front. The interior contains divisions lined in red leather and blue silk, accompanied by a full set of bone draughts, two turned ebony dice shakers, dice, cribbage markers, playing cards, bone scoring pointers, and bone counters. The inside of the lid holds two gilded brass games boards for bezique and cribbage, and the interior bears a retailer label for Mechi of Regent Street, London. Measuring 10 cm high, 30.5 cm wide, and 24 cm deep, this unrestored piece retains its original rich patina. On display in a home today, this games box works well placed upon a sideboard top or desk in a living room, study, or drawing room. It provides both decorative appeal through its combination of coromandel, brass, and agate materials, and functional utility for storing and playing traditional parlour games. Collectors and enthusiasts of Victorian antiques can appreciate the comprehensive original contents and historical branding, making it a fitting addition to period interiors and surface displays where historical smalls are showcased.

A Victorian games box, or games compendium, is a decorative wooden casket produced during the 19th century, designed to store various parlour games such as chess, draughts, dominoes, and playing cards.

These boxes were constructed using exotic hardwoods such as coromandel, walnut, or rosewood, frequently embellished with engraved brass strapwork, bone, ivory, or semi-precious stone cabochons such as agate.

Authentic 19th-century examples typically feature hand-fitted dovetail joinery, original brass hardware secured with slotted screws, and fitted interior compartments lined with velvet, silk, or leather.

A games box functions as a decorative tabletop piece when placed on a library desk, coffee table, or sideboard, adding historical texture through its figure, brasswork, and stone details.

Maintain the finish by dusting with a soft microfibre cloth and applying high-grade beeswax polish sparingly, avoiding direct sunlight and radiators to prevent wood movement and shrinkage.
