This large French Rococo console mirror dates from the mid 19th century, specifically around 1860. The piece takes the form of an arched pier mirror enclosed within a gilded timber and gesso frame. The decoration includes a scrolling ribbon cresting at the top, floral garlands, beaded mouldings along the vertical uprights, and carved corner finials. The surface displays a warm gold colour with visible signs of antique age and weathering. The original glass plate is double bevelled and held within the structured surround. Measuring 152 cm high by 104 cm wide, the mirror stands upright on the floor during display. In a contemporary home, this large wall mirror suits placement above a sideboard in a dining room, living room, or hallway to reflect light and add architectural presence. The traditional Rococo aesthetic complements French chateau or classic interior schemes. The tall proportions allow the piece to anchor a room as a principal decorative feature.

French Rococo mirrors originate from the mid-18th century, characterised by curved silhouettes, floral carving, scrollwork, and gilded finishes designed to reflect light within grand interiors.

These frames were typically carved from wood such as pine or lime, coated with layer of gesso, and gilded using gold leaf over a clay base before fitting with glass.

Authentic period pieces frequently show hand-carved joinery on the wooden backboards, mild foxing or dark spots on the mirror glass, and reddish clay visible through worn areas of gilding.

Positioning a Rococo gilt mirror above a minimalist console table or modern fireplace creates a focal point by contrasting detailed historical craftsmanship against simple contemporary lines.

Dust the gilded frame gently with a soft dry brush or feather duster, avoiding water, liquid cleaners, or polish that can dissolve the gesso and gold leaf layer.
