Pair of Antique French Carved Gilt Wood Mirrors

19th century
Description

An exceptional pair of antique French carved gilt wood mirrors. We would date them from around the 1840-1860 period, though they could possibly be older.

They have a stunning design, very much in the Rococo fashion. The wood is carved in beautiful shapes and they are an impressive size. The quality is outstanding.

They are in lovely overall condition, we have had them professionally restored and re-gilded in some small areas. The glass would have been replaced at some point.

French Rococo mirrors from the 18th century and later revival periods are characterised by asymmetrical designs, dramatic C-scrolls, acanthus leaves, and naturalistic foliage motifs, designed to reflect light and add dynamic movement to interior spaces.

These mirrors were hand-carved from timber such as lime or pine, coated with a gesso preparatory layer, and finished with gold leaf applied using water gilding or oil gilding techniques.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-carved joinery, visible wood grain or carving marks beneath worn gesso, natural oxidisation on the original mirror glass, and wear to the gold leaf showing the coloured clay bole base.

Positioning a pair to flank a central focal point, such as a mantlepiece, console table, or doorway, creates visual balance while the warm gilding contrasts against modern paint finishes.

Dust gently with a dry, soft camel hair brush, avoiding water or chemical cleaners that dissolve traditional gesso and detach gold leaf, and clean glass surfaces sparingly using damp cotton swabs.
