Antique Quality French Louis XV Style Marquetry Side Cabinet

1900 - 1920
Description

A fine antique quality French Louis XV style side cabinet beautifully crafted in kingwood and tulipwood veneers with exquisite floral marquetry and gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts.

The shaped top edged with a decorative brass gallery is crossbanded and inlaid with delicate geometric patterns that highlight the warm tones of the veneers. Beneath are a single drawer and a curved cupboard door enclosing a shelved interior, all adorned with intricate floral marquetry panels and ornate ormolu escutcheons.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1900s:
Darkened recesses on the cast brass mounts: age to the metalwork.
Fine hairline shrinkage along the bookmatched top: natural movement in mature timber.
Pinned brass gallery border: cabinet work from around the turn of the century.
Veneered reverse panel with banded inlay: finished for freestanding salon placement.

This antique French Louis XV style side cabinet, dating from 1900, is fashioned from warm brown kingwood and tulipwood veneers. The shaped top is bordered by a pierced brass gallery rim and detailed with geometric marquetry. Below the top rest three graduated drawers, each fitted with an ornate brass pull handle and decorative escutcheon. The exterior is enhanced by cast brass mounts on the corners and slender cabriole legs terminating in scrolled feet. The cabinet measures 86 cm high, 53.5 cm wide, and 39 cm deep. It fits well at the end of a sofa in a living room, in a hallway, or inside a refined bedroom setting.

The Louis XV style, predominant in 18th-century France, is characterised by curvilinear shapes, slender cabriole legs, asymmetrical Rococo elements, and decorative wood marquetry veneer.

Craftsmen typically utilised hardwood veneers such as walnut, rosewood, and kingwood over a solid timber carcass, complemented by cast brass or bronze ormolu mounts and gallery rims.

Key identification markers include hand-cut wood inlay patterns, cast metal mounts shaped precisely to the cabinet curves, dovetailed drawer joints, and swept cabriole legs with decorative sabots.

Position the cabinet as an accent piece in a contemporary setting, pairing the detailed woodwork alongside modern artwork or minimalist lighting to create a refined visual contrast.

Maintain the finish by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and applying natural beeswax sparingly along the grain, while avoiding direct sunlight and proximity to heat sources.
