A pair of Victorian round seat nursing chairs, also known as bedroom slipper chairs, originates from the 19th century and dates to approximately 1870 with attribution to Gillows of Lancaster. The elegant mahogany frames comprise carved and turned wooden components, displaying warm brown timber tones, fitted with original brass and porcelain castors beneath turned front legs. Traditional upholstery throughout employs hessian, exposed inner stuffing, horsehair fillings, and sprung seats covered in a textured fabric patterned in charcoal grey and cream. Both frames bear number stamps conforming to documented Gillows methods, showing authentic wear consistent with age. Measuring 56 cm in width, 66 cm in depth, and 70 cm in height with a seat height of 34 cm, these low seats provide comfortable bedroom or dressing room seating. An English Country House style suits placement in a master bedroom, a guest suite, or a quiet reading corner, where compact proportions allow flexible arrangement beside a dressing table or fireplace. Traditional materials and period craftsmanship integrate naturally into classic or eclectic historic interiors.

Originally designed during the nineteenth century, nursing chairs feature low seats and armless profiles to accommodate women wearing voluminous dresses while caring for infants.

These chairs were typically constructed with solid hardwood frames, such as mahogany or walnut, stuffed with natural horsehair and jute hessian, and fitted with brass castors.

Authenticity is often indicated by turned hardwood front legs, original brass castors, low seat heights, and traditional joinery methods such as mortise and tenon joints.

Position them as low accent seating beside a fireplace, at the foot of a bed, or within a reading corner to add historical texture and character.

Keep wooden components away from direct heat sources to prevent timber cracking, treat frame wood with natural beeswax, and consult professional restorers for re-upholstery using period-correct techniques.
