This pair of 18th century Venetian Rococo wall mirrors consists of ornate giltwood frames finished in a bright gold colour, encasing shaped original glass plates. Each piece displays elaborate decorative carvings, including a floral basket cresting at the top, carved birds perched on the sides, extensive scrollwork, and acanthus leaf details at the base. Visible signs of age and historic wear appear on the aged reflective glass surfaces. Each mirror measures 90 cm high and 60 cm wide, providing substantial decorative presence for a home interior. In a contemporary setting, these wall mirrors suit placement above a sideboard in a dining room, living area, or hallway.

Eighteenth-century Venetian Rococo mirrors are renowned for lighthearted, asymmetrical carving, elaborate crestings, and nature-inspired motifs such as foliage, shellwork, and birds. They often incorporate gilded carved timber frames surrounding hand-blown glass plates designed to reflect ambient candlelight.

These mirrors were crafted using carved softwood bases, coated with layers of gesso, and finished using water gilding with gold leaf. The reflective plates were constructed using mercury amalgams poured over blown glass sheets.

Authentic period pieces display hand-carved joinery on the reverse timber backing, natural oxidisation or foxing in the glass, and red or grey bole clay showing through areas where the gold leaf has worn naturally over time.

Positioning a pair of gilded mirrors above a modern sideboard or flanking an architectural feature creates symmetry and visual depth, balancing contemporary clean lines with historic texture.

Dust giltwood frames gently using a soft dry brush, avoiding liquid cleaners or water which dissolve original gesso and gold leaf. Clean glass plates using a slightly damp cloth applied strictly to the glass surface, preventing moisture from entering the frame edges.
