FAQs

Victorian salon and dining chairs from the mid-to-late 19th century are characterised by ornate carved back splats, rich mahogany timber, and upholstered seats designed for formal entertaining spaces.

Craftspeople crafted these chairs using dense mahogany timber, employing traditional mortise and tenon joinery alongside hand-carved back splats and upholstered seats.

Genuine examples exhibit detailed hand-carved decorative elements, natural patination on the timber frame, structural corner blocks beneath the seat, and period joinery rather than modern fixings.

Pair these carved wood chairs with a minimalist contemporary dining table or place individual chairs as accent seating in hallways to create contrast between traditional and modern design.

Dust the timber frame regularly with a dry soft cloth, apply beeswax polish annually along the wood grain, and clean the upholstery using a gentle vacuum attachment.
