The Regency style, spanning the late 18th to early 19th century, is characterised by classical symmetry, heavily inspired by ancient Greek, Roman, and Egyptian motifs, often incorporating ebonised details, ball accents, and gilded surfaces.

These frames were typically constructed from pine or hardwoods, covered in a layer of gesso, and meticulously water-gilded or oil-gilded with genuine gold leaf. Traditional construction often features hand-cut glass plates held within rebated frames.

Authenticity is indicated by the presence of hand-applied gold leaf over gesso, shrinkage cracks in the gesso layer, old pine backboards secured with hand-cut iron nails, and imperfections or foxing within the original silvered mirror plate.

To integrate this piece into a modern setting, hang it above a minimalist console table or fireplace mantel to create a striking focal point that contrasts historical ornamentation with clean, contemporary lines.

Giltwood frames are extremely delicate and sensitive to moisture; dust them gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush, and avoid all chemical cleaning agents or liquid polishes which can strip the original gold leaf.
