Description

A very stylish and extremely well made pair of Swedish Art Deco armchairs in Satin Birch. They were recently imported from Sweden, they date from the 1930’s.

They have lovely proportions and are very comfortable. The quality is amazing, with scalloped backs and beautiful satin birch frames that sweep down the arms and into the legs. The satin birch has a gorgeous colour tone and stunning grain patterns.

We have had the frames stripped and re-polished to a very high standard, and these have been fully re-upholstered in a cream cotton fabric. The condition is superb throughout.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Swedish Art Deco, often associated with the Swedish Grace movement of the 1920s and 1930s, combines classicism with minimalist modernism. It is defined by clean silhouettes, elegant geometric curves, and the refined use of light-coloured native woods such as satin birch and flame birch.

Craftsmen typically utilised solid and veneered native woods including satin birch, alder, and pine for frame construction. Upholstery traditionally incorporated natural horsehair and coil springs covered in wool, velvet, or linen fabrics.

Authentic pieces usually exhibit swept, steam-bent wood armrests, subtle channelled or shell-stitched backrests, and tapered timber legs. Look for traditional joinery, maker stamps beneath the frame, and the characteristic warm patina of aged satin birch.

These armchairs serve as focal accent seating when placed opposite a low-profile sofa or flanking a fireplace. Their neutral palette and sculptural wooden armrests allow them to blend seamlessly with both contemporary minimalist decor and classic interior schemes.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent drying or discolouration. Polish the wooden armrests using a high-grade beeswax paste, and clean the upholstery regularly using a soft vacuum attachment or specialised dry fabric cleaner.
