This Victorian overmantel mirror dates from 1860 and embodies the English Country House style. Constructed from wood and gesso with a gold leaf finish, the arched frame showcases intricate bead moulding along the top, ornate scroll side flourishes, and decorative carved feet resting on a flat base. The reflective glass plate retains its original character, accompanied by the original backboards at the rear. Measuring 78 cm high, 125 cm wide, and 4 cm deep, the compact scale makes it suitable for placement above a traditional mantelpiece in a sitting room, drawing room, or bedroom. Alternatively, it works well as a decorative focal point hung above a side table in an entrance hallway.

Originating in the 19th century, overmantel mirrors were designed specifically to sit above a fireplace hearth or mantelpiece, often featuring a flat base and an arched top to complement period architectural mouldings.

These mirrors typically feature a carved timber frame covered with gesso moulding, which is subsequently painted or layered with thin gold leaf over mercury or silvered mirror glass.

Authentic 19th-century pieces often display natural age-related wear, light crazing within the gesso, period timber backing boards, and minor oxidisation or foxing on the glass surface.

Position the mirror directly above a living room fireplace or a hallway console table to reflect natural light and create a focal point in traditional or eclectic settings.

Dust the gilded frame gently using a soft dry brush, avoiding water or liquid chemical sprays that can dissolve or alter delicate gesso and gold leaf finishes.
