Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1900s:
Wear to the polish on the armrests and front stretchers: extensive handling over decades.
Medullary rays, the silvery flecks of quarter-sawn oak, visible across the framework.
Relief carving with machine shaping and hand detailing: cabinet making around nineteen hundred.
Shrinkage gaps at the structural joints: natural wood movement over a long period.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This pair of large 1900 Art Nouveau armchairs comprises high-backed wooden seating rendered in dark brown oak with contrasting red leather upholstery. Each chair displays an elaborately carved cresting pediment at the top, an openwork back splat containing decorative scroll motifs, and padded scroll arms flanking the seat. The red leather is secured with rows of metal studding along the seat borders and the oval back cushions, while the heavy framework is supported by turned stretchers and sturdy legs resting directly on the ground. Visible signs of age include surface wear and light fading to the dark timber finish and the red leather surfaces. Measuring 140 cm high, 66 cm wide, and 54 cm deep, these substantial chairs suit placement in a large entrance hall, a gentlemen's library, or a spacious dining room. They provide formal seating around a large dining table or serve as statement accent pieces positioned against a wall in a generous living space.

Art Nouveau seating is defined by organic, flowing lines, whiplash curves, and decorative hand-carved motifs inspired by nature. Produced predominantly between 1890 and 1910, these pieces blend functional woodwork with sculptural, artistic forms.

High-back armchairs from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries were typically constructed using durable hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut. Upholstery frequently featured natural leather, heavy velvet, or needlepoint fabrics secured with brass studding.

Authenticity can be determined by examining joinery techniques, such as traditional mortise and tenon joints, as well as hand-planed surfaces or irregular carving details. Genuine period timber displays natural patination, subtle shrinkage along the grain, and age-consistent wear on stretchers and armrests.

Large carved armchairs serve effectively as accent pieces in modern interiors. Position them flanking a console table in a wide hallway, placed beside a fireplace hearth, or arranged at either end of a contemporary dining table to create visual contrast.

Oak timber should be dusted regularly with a soft cloth and conditioned annually with natural beeswax polish. Upholstered leather components require gentle cleaning with a damp cloth and routine application of a dedicated leather balm to prevent drying and cracking.
