Shibayama style originated in late-Edo period Japan, created by Ogaki Shibayama, who developed a distinct technique of inlaying materials like mother-of-pearl, ivory, and tortoiseshell into wood or lacquer bases.

Authentic pieces traditionally utilise a hardwood or lacquered wooden core, inset with intricate reliefs crafted from shell, bone, ivory, horn, and coloured stone.

Authentic items feature minute, highly detailed multi-material inlays secured with great precision into hand-carved recesses, often displaying natural ageing, fine craquelure, and traditional Japanese motifs.

Place the object as a focal point on a coffee table, bookshelf, or console to introduce texture, historical depth, and cultural craftsmanship into a contemporary minimalist or eclectic scheme.

Keep the object away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations to prevent the wood from warping and to protect the delicate adhesives securing the inlaid materials.
