Description

An amazing and very rare pair of antique wing back armchairs by Hille. They were made by Ray & Solomon Hille in England, and date from around the 1920’s.

The quality is fantastic, with very generous proportions, they are also extremely comfortable. The shapely frames with humpbacks, sit on finely carved solid walnut legs.

We have recently had these fully re-upholstered in a beautiful charcoal wool fabric that contrasts nicely with the light wood legs that have just been cleaned and re-polished. The condition is excellent throughout, with only some minor wear and patina remaining to the wood under the polish.

Depth – 36 inches , 92 cm

Height – 46 inches , 117 cm

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Wingback chairs originated in the seventeenth century, specifically designed to shield occupants from drafts in poorly heated homes and to trap heat from open fireplaces.

Traditional construction typically involves a solid hardwood frame, hand-tied coil spring foundations, horsehair or wool stuffing, and durable upholstery fabrics such as wool or velvet.

Authentic pieces can be identified through traditional joinery techniques, handmade frame construction, material ageing characteristics, and makers marks or stamps where applicable.

Pairing traditional upholstered seating with modern minimalist architecture or contrasting contemporary side tables creates a balanced, eclectic aesthetic that highlights the heritage design.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming with a soft brush attachment, keeping the items away from direct sunlight to prevent fabric fading, and periodic professional textile cleaning.
