FAQs

A giltwood mirror features a wooden frame coated with a thin layer of gold leaf or powder. Originating during the Renaissance and heavily favored in Baroque and Rococo periods, these mirrors were handcrafted by skilled artisans as statement pieces for European nobility and elite residences.

Traditional frames are carved from softwoods such as pine or lime, then coated with layers of gesso and bole before applying gold leaf. The glass is often hand-silvered or features historic manufacturing traits such as slight bevels or imperfections characteristic of older production methods.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the gesso and bole layers for natural ageing, craquelure, and wear consistent with age. Hand-carved tool marks on the reverse of the wooden frame and the presence of mercury or older silvering techniques on the glass plate also indicate genuine antique status.

An antique gilt mirror works effectively as a focal point when contrasted against minimalist modern architecture or neutral walls. Leaning it casually against a living room or hallway wall introduces verticality, warmth, and reflective light without requiring heavy traditional framing.

Giltwood frames require gentle maintenance using a soft, dry ostrich feather duster to remove surface dust. Avoid liquid cleaners, chemical sprays, and direct sunlight, as moisture and UV exposure can cause the delicate gold leaf and gesso layers to flake or discolour.
