Description

An outstanding antique Victorian leather barrel back wing armchair. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1840-1860 period.

It is of superb quality and is a great size, large and comfortable but not too imposing. The barrel shaped back is fluted with scrolled arms and a feather filled cushion. It stands on beautifully turned solid walnut legs with solid brass casters.

We have had the frame fully re-upholstered in russet leather which has been hand coloured to give this gorgeous colour tone and patina. The legs have also been stripped and re-polished, the condition is excellent throughout.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Barrel back armchairs feature a semicircular upholstered backrest that curves seamlessly into the arms, a design that gained significant popularity during the Victorian era for its draught-excluding qualities near fireplaces.

Authentic period pieces typically feature a sturdy hardwood frame made from beech or mahogany, hand-tied coil springs, horsehair stuffing, and premium full-grain leather upholstery secured with traditional tacks.

Authentication involves examining the hand-stitched seams, the type of leather patination, traditional joinery methods within the frame, and the presence of hand-forged or cast brass hardware.

Pairing the rich texture of aged leather with contemporary minimalist elements, neutral walls, or contrasting textiles creates a balanced, sophisticated focal point in a living space or study.

Maintain antique leather by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting regularly with a soft cloth, and periodically applying specialized leather leather balm to prevent drying and cracking.
