Antique Victorian Leather Chesterfield Armchair

19th century
Description

A large and very impressive antique Victorian leather Chesterfield armchair. This was made in England, we would date it to around the 1880’s period.

The quality is outstanding, this is extremely well made and comfortable. The deep buttoned leather has a gorgeous green colour tone and an absolutely beautiful patina. This is filled with horse hair and sits on mahogany bun feet with brass casters beneath.

We have had this revived and enhanced by our leather restorer, there is one very small repair to the back edge, barely noticeable at all. Overall this is in superb condition for its age.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The Victorian Chesterfield armchair is defined by its deep buttoned leather upholstery, rolled arms, and substantial frame. Historically designed with arms and back at a uniform height, these chairs feature hand-tacked brass studding and turned wooden legs fitted with castors.

Traditional construction involved solid timber framesoften beech or oakfitted with hand-tied coil springs and webbed support. Upholstery fillers included natural materials such as horsehair and coconut fibre, finished with full-grain dyed leather hide.

Authentic period armchairs feature solid hardwood frames joined with mortise and tenon joints, hand-hammered individual brass studs rather than continuous strip studding, and natural age-related patination on the leather surface.

A dark leather Chesterfield armchair functions well as a focal point when placed alongside modern minimalist side tables or crisp linen upholstery. Pairing the rich, textured leather with architectural lighting creates a balanced contrast between traditional and contemporary elements.

Maintain leather upholstery by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying a specialist leather balsam annually to retain flexibility. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying, cracking, and colour fading.
