Hoshiarpur inlay work originates from Punjab, India, during the 19th century, characterised by intricate geometric and floral patterns rendered in bone, ivory, or mother-of-pearl set into dark hardwoods such as teak or rosewood.

These boxes were typically constructed from native Indian hardwoods including teak, ebony, or rosewood, and embellished with hand-carved bone, ivory, or metal inlays alongside brass hinges and corner mounts.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut inlay pieces with slight natural variations, fine jointing, dark age patina on the timber, and period-correct hardware such as brass locks and hinges.

Inlaid boxes serve as decorative accents on a coffee table, console, or open shelving, adding visual texture, history, and intricate pattern to contemporary schemes.

Keep the box away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity to prevent wood movement or inlay detachment, and dust gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth.
