Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian writing slope is an antique desk accessory fashioned from warm brown burr walnut veneer with a domed lid, measuring 15.2 cm high, 30 cm wide, and 22.2 cm deep. The exterior displays a central rectangular inlaid cartouche with a patterned border, a brass keyhole escutcheon on the front face, and a metal key with a yellow cord dangling from the lock. The visual elements include polished wood grain patterns across the curved surfaces, a smooth varnished finish, and contrasting geometric inlay around the vacant engraving plate. Position this portable box on an office desk, library table, or shelving unit in a study or home workspace to store stationery, letters, and small accessories. The piece provides a functional writing surface and desktop storage solution, suiting traditional and period interior schemes in a home setting.

FAQs

A writing slope, or lap desk, is a portable wooden box designed with an inclined writing surface inside, widely used during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to store paper, pens, and ink.

Victorian writing slopes were typically constructed from hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, or rosewood, often featuring decorative burr veneers, mother-of-pearl or brass inlays, and interior velvet or leather writing surfaces.

Authentic Victorian examples usually demonstrate hand-cut dovetail joinery, period-correct brass escutcheons, original working locks, and natural surface wear consistent with age.

An antique writing slope works effectively as a functional decorative object on a modern home office desk, console table, or library sideboard, introducing historical character to contemporary rooms.

Burr walnut requires protection from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent timber movement and fading. Regular light dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and occasional applications of beeswax polish maintain the surface finish.
