Description

Ebonised and Gilt Painted Regency Open Arm Elbow Chair, Cane Seat C1820 in the manner of John Gee

A fine quality ebonised Regency elbow or dining chair of elegant proportions and exquisite design, featuring elements traditional of the period and hints towards the London workshop of John Gee.

A handsome Regency elbow chair of excellent design and original painted decoration to the beech frame with a deep and wide circular caned seat, believed also to be original.

The underside of the frame does not show a makers stamp, possibly by the late 18th to 19th century London workshop of John Gee, tbc, or other.

A great surviving chair in what presents as mostly original condition, showing evidence of timeworn use and some wear to the arms and running if the gilt-paint decoration in some obvious areas which adds authenticity and character.

The chair is going through our workshop to tighten any loose joints, otherwise an original and stable chair that sits well, a very fine example.

A handsome antique chair of versatile use and considerable decorative appeal for a day or bedroom, hall or landing, dressing room or kitchen dayroom etc.., an interior design chair that can enhance a classic or contemporary space.

Regency furniture, spanning roughly from 1811 to 1830, is characterised by classical symmetry, heavily inspired by ancient Greek, Roman, and Egyptian designs, often featuring painted finishes and gilt highlights.

These chairs were typically constructed from native hardwoods such as beech or birch, which were then ebonised or painted, and frequently incorporated woven cane for lightweight and resilient seats.

Authentic pieces often display period construction techniques such as hand-cut joints, subtle wear patterns on the painted surface, and organic variations in the hand-woven cane work.

An ebonised chair serves as a striking contrast piece in a modern setting, functioning well as a standalone desk chair or an accent seating option against neutral walls.

Cane seats should be kept away from direct heat sources and occasionally wiped with a slightly damp cloth to prevent the natural fibres from drying out and becoming brittle.
