The Sustainable Choice

FAQs

Repousse is a metalworking technique where the metal is hammered into relief from the reverse side. Mirrors featuring this decorative metalwork gained prominence during the 17th and 18th centuries in Europe, particularly in France, where artisans crafted elaborate frames with floral, scroll and figural motifs.

These pieces typically consist of a wooden carcass or substrate overlaid with thin sheets of repousse brass, copper, or gilt metal. The individual panels are secured with traditional pins or adhesives, surrounding a hand-bevelled or segmented glass mirror plate.

Authentic pieces often exhibit age-related characteristics such as foxing and oxidisation on the mirror glass, hand-cut fasteners, natural wear on the metallic finish, and subtle irregularities in the hand-hammered relief work that machine-made reproductions lack.

An ornate metallic mirror functions as a striking focal point when hung above a minimalist console table or a contemporary fireplace mantel, creating a deliberate contrast between historic craftsmanship and clean modern lines.

Dust the frame gently with a soft, dry cloth and avoid harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive polishes that can strip the historic gilt or patinated finish. Clean the glass sparingly using a cloth slightly dampened with distilled water, ensuring moisture does not seep behind the frame.
