Windsor chairs originated in England during the early 18th century, evolving from vernacular furniture traditions where spindles were inserted directly into a solid wooden seat.

Traditional construction typically involved a combination of timbers, frequently utilising elm for the carved seats, ash or beech for the bent bows and spindles, and fruitwood or pine for the undercarriage.

Authenticity is assessed by examining tool marks on the underside of the saddle seat, the presence of wedged through-tennong joints, and the natural oxidisation and wear patterns appropriate to the stated age.

They provide a natural textural contrast when paired with modern minimalist dining tables or serve as sculptural seating around a rustic timber table.

Maintain them by keeping them away from direct heat sources and sunlight, dusting regularly with a dry cloth, and occasionally applying a traditional beeswax polish to nourish the timber.
