This eighteenth-century primitive oak hanging candle box originates from a cottage in North Wales and has an original hand-joined construction. The timber exhibits a deep rich dark brown finish, accented by a small wrought iron handle mounted near the top of the sliding lid. Surface wear shows age across the wood panels, while the rectangular box retains its traditional sliding lid design. It measures 32 cm high, 14 cm wide, and 11 cm deep. Such small wooden treen items served practical domestic storage needs before the widespread use of electricity. In a modern home, this piece suits placement on a narrow wall space in a hallway, kitchen, or living room as a rustic farmhouse accent.

During the 18th century, candle boxes were utilitarian household containers used to store tallow or beeswax candles, protecting them from pests and moisture. They were typically designed to hang vertically on a wall or rest near a fireplace for convenient access.

Primitive candle boxes were crafted primarily from local hardwoods such as oak, pine, or elm, often featuring hand-joined construction with simple nailed or dovetailed joints. Lids were frequently constructed with sliding grooves or wooden hinges, accompanied by forged iron fitments or simple hanging apertures.

Authentic pieces display evidence of hand-tool marks, such as pit-saw or hand-plane traces, along with natural wear around the sliding grooves and hanging eyelet. Natural timber oxidation, age-related shrinkage causing slight structural irregularities, and original hand-forged ironwork also indicate authenticity.

A primitive candle box can be mounted on a kitchen or hallway wall to add historic texture against contemporary plaster or brickwork. Alternatively, it can be styled horizontally on a sideboard or mantelpiece as a functional storage container for matches and small household items.

Preserve the wood by dusting regularly with a dry cloth and applying a beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the oak surface. Avoid placing the item near direct heat sources or damp environments to prevent wood movement and splitting.
